The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is witnessing significant developments as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has officially pledged its support to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s newly formed party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This announcement comes amid crucial efforts to establish a government following the recent assembly elections.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan stated that the decision to support TVK was made to facilitate the formation of a stable government in the state and prevent the imposition of President’s Rule. With the backing of the VCK, which holds two seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the TVK has gained the necessary momentum to secure a majority.
In the recent elections, which marked the debut of the TVK, Vijay’s party emerged as the single-largest entity, clinching 108 seats. However, this total falls short of the majority threshold of 118 seats, necessitating alliances with other political factions. In the past few days, the TVK has garnered further support from the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), both of which hold two seats each, along with the Congress party, which won five seats and expressed its solidarity with Vijay’s coalition on Wednesday.
Despite the promising coalition, the effective strength of the TVK is currently 107, as Vijay must relinquish one of the two seats he won due to electoral regulations. As political maneuvering continues, Vijay is expected to meet the governor soon to formally stake his claim to form the government, aiming to solidify his party’s position in the assembly.
This strategic alliance among various parties highlights the evolving dynamics of Tamil Nadu’s political arena, showcasing how critical coalition-building has become in the face of a fragmented assembly. The support from smaller parties not only reinforces Vijay’s position but also reflects the collective desire among these factions to ensure a stable governance framework in the state.
