In a significant revelation, China has publicly acknowledged that it provided technical assistance to Pakistan during the intense four-day conflict with India in May 2025. This acknowledgment comes from an interview aired on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, where Zhang Heng, an engineer from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, shared insights about the collaboration with Pakistani military forces during the conflict.
Zhang, who is affiliated with the Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute, detailed the challenging conditions faced by his team while stationed at a support base in Pakistan. He described the atmosphere as tense, with the sounds of fighter jets taking off frequently echoing, alongside the unsettling wails of air-raid sirens. “By late morning, temperatures soared near 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), making it a real ordeal for us, both mentally and physically,” he recounted, highlighting the extreme conditions under which they operated.
The engineer emphasized that the primary goal of his team was to ensure that the military equipment they were providing could operate at its maximum combat effectiveness. This statement underscores China’s pivotal role in bolstering Pakistan’s military capabilities amid rising tensions with India.
The conflict, referred to as Operation Sindoor, erupted following India’s military strikes targeting alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes were launched in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals. The subsequent retaliatory actions from the Pakistan Army led to an escalation that drew international attention and concern, marking a significant chapter in the long-standing rivalry between the two nations.
Analysts suggest that China’s admission of support not only highlights its strategic partnership with Pakistan but also signals its stance in the ongoing geopolitical dynamics in South Asia. As India continues to navigate its security challenges, the developments surrounding Operation Sindoor add another layer to the complex tapestry of regional politics.
