The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail for one week to Abdul Rashid Sheikh, commonly known as Engineer Rashid, allowing him to visit his critically ill father. Sheikh, a Lok Sabha MP representing Baramulla, has been in custody since August 2019 due to his alleged involvement in a terror-funding case initiated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Sheikh’s legal struggles have been ongoing; his request for interim bail was previously denied by a Delhi court on April 24. Following this setback, the MP approached the High Court, which took into account that he had been incarcerated for over six years. In its decision, the court stipulated that Sheikh must be accompanied by two plainclothes police officials during his visit. This condition reflects the seriousness of the charges against him, as well as the high-profile nature of his case.
As part of the bail conditions, Sheikh is required to remain either at the hospital or at his father’s residence. Furthermore, he must maintain communication through a single mobile phone number, which should be kept active at all times. The court has prohibited him from contacting any witnesses or attempting to influence their testimonies, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal protocols during this time. Additionally, Sheikh is required to submit a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh along with a surety of the same amount.
This interim bail comes after a long period of legal battles for Sheikh, who has been a controversial figure in Indian politics. His previous courtesy parole in July 2024 for two hours was granted solely for him to take an oath in Parliament after winning re-election. His case continues to evoke strong reactions from various quarters, reflecting the contentious nature of political narratives in the region.
As Sheikh prepares for his brief return to his family, his supporters and critics alike will be closely watching how this development unfolds, especially in the context of his ongoing legal challenges and future in Indian politics.
