In a significant update concerning the electoral process in Delhi, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) announced on Saturday that approximately 26 lakh cases, representing 78.5% of the 33.1 lakh discrepancies identified in the voter roll, have been successfully resolved. This process is part of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the electoral lists ahead of the upcoming elections.
The 33 lakh voters who received notices comprise nearly one-third of the 97.5 lakh individuals listed in the draft electoral roll. Among these flagged cases, 13.7 lakh voters were noted for not linking their details to the electoral roll from the previous special revision, while 19.3 lakh faced issues related to “logical discrepancies” in their enumeration forms.
The verification process for these discrepancies is set to conclude by October 29, positioning the final electoral rolls for publication on November 4. This timeline is crucial as it aligns with the electoral calendar, ensuring that any potential voters can be accurately represented in the upcoming elections.
The Supreme Court of India, on September 22, acknowledged concerns regarding the notices sent to voters categorized in the “doubtful” list. The court highlighted that the notifications lacked sufficient information and clarity about the discrepancies cited. This observation pointed to a potential flaw in the electoral process that could result in confusion among voters regarding their eligibility.
Prior to the current revision exercise, Delhi had approximately 1.4 crore registered electors. Notably, during the draft electoral roll publication on August 31, 47.7 lakh voters were removed due to various reasons. With this ongoing resolution effort, the Delhi electoral body is working diligently to correct errors and ensure that all eligible voters are accurately accounted for, thereby upholding the democratic process.
