In an intriguing blend of social commentary and creativity, a young engineer has introduced a satirical video game titled ‘Jantar Mantar Chalo,’ inspired by the ongoing protests in New Delhi. The game emerges against the backdrop of significant unrest, as over 25,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain order amidst demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his controversial electoral roll revisions.
Suraj Kushwah, a 27-year-old software engineer from Delhi, conceived the game shortly after protests erupted on October 2. Inspired by the news coverage he witnessed, Kushwah envisioned a 2D gaming experience that allows players to immerse themselves in the complexities and challenges faced by demonstrators trying to reach the famed protest site of Jantar Mantar. The site has historically been a venue for dissent; however, it has recently been denotified, adding to the urgency and significance of the ongoing protests.
In ‘Jantar Mantar Chalo,’ players have the unique opportunity to embody either protesters, known as andolankaris, or police personnel. As a protester, one must navigate through barricades and rally fellow demonstrators to form a ‘kafila,’ or procession, aiming to stage a dharna, or sit-in, at Jantar Mantar. Conversely, players who assume the role of police officers can employ lathis (batons) and tear gas to suppress the protests, detain individuals, and transport them in buses. This dual perspective has made the game appealing to a broad audience, even gaining traction among government supporters who relish the chance to counter the protesters.
Kushwah highlights that the game’s design incorporates not only the physical confrontations and police actions but also the broader implications of internet censorship and digital engagement surrounding protests in India. The game reflects the challenges of organizing and voicing dissent in an increasingly surveilled and controlled environment, making it relevant to contemporary issues faced by many in the country.
As the game gains popularity, it serves as a medium for commentary on civil rights, the political landscape, and the role of technology in activism. By transforming the struggle for justice into an interactive experience, ‘Jantar Mantar Chalo’ invites players from around the globe to understand the nuances of protest culture in India, making it a noteworthy addition to the dialogue surrounding freedom of expression and political participation.
