In a significant political move, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition, called upon President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday to reconsider the appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the governor of Sikkim. This request comes at a time when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the murder of Ankita Bhandari, whose tragic case has garnered widespread attention and concern regarding women’s safety in India.
The appointment of Gautam, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sparked protests from the family of the victim, as well as Congress MPs, who were detained by security forces during a sit-in at India Gate in New Delhi. The protestors argued that Gautam’s alleged connections to the murder case of Bhandari, who worked at a resort in Uttarakhand, should disqualify him from holding such a significant position. Bhandari’s family and various activists have expressed their belief that Gautam may have ties to the VIP circles implicated in her murder.
On Monday, the announcement of Gautam’s governorship was met with outrage, particularly as allegations surfaced regarding his connection to the case. Gandhi took to social media to highlight the implications of this appointment, stating, “By appointing Dushyant Gautam, Prime Minister Modi is showing a blatant disregard for women’s safety in the country.” His comments reflect growing concerns over governmental accountability and the need for justice in high-profile cases involving women.
The backstory of Ankita Bhandari’s murder is deeply disturbing. The 19-year-old went missing on September 18, 2022, while employed as a receptionist at a resort owned by Pulkit Arya, the son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya. After a fruitless day of searching, her colleagues filed a missing person report, but the narrative soon shifted dramatically. Within days, the trio of suspects, including Arya, confessed to the heinous act of pushing Bhandari into a canal following an argument, leading to her untimely death. Her body was discovered six days later, escalating public outcry and demands for justice.
The murder investigation has already led to significant political fallout, resulting in the expulsion of Vinod Arya from the BJP. The ongoing debate surrounding Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim’s governor illustrates the tension between political affiliations and the imperative for justice in cases involving severe crimes. As the investigation continues, the public’s call for transparency and accountability remains unwavering, especially in light of the distressing implications for women’s safety in India.
