On October 8, a group of Maharashtra students, led by Shravani Bua, faced a sudden intervention by authorities while traveling on the Goa Express to Delhi. Bua, a student at the University of Pune, along with 13 peers, intended to participate in a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Their journey took an unexpected turn at Bhusawal station in Jalgaon district, where they were approached by Maharashtra police officers. According to Bua, when the police requested the group to accompany them for questioning, the students insisted on seeing a legal warrant. After a brief argument, the police retreated, allowing the students to continue their journey.
However, the situation escalated when the train reached Itarsi station later that day around 6 PM. A significant contingent of Madhya Pradesh police boarded the train and forcibly removed the students from their seats. Bua recounted a distressing scene where the officers allegedly “manhandled, dragged, and forced” them out of the coach, raising concerns about the treatment meted out to the students.
Post-detainment, the students were taken to Park Club and Resort in Itarsi, where they were held without clear communication regarding their situation. Bua expressed concerns for her peers’ well-being, stating that one of the students might have sustained a minor fracture during the confrontation.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding student protests in India, particularly those relating to political accountability and governance. Shravani Bua’s previous involvement in nationwide demonstrations earlier this year, which called for the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, highlights a broader trend of youth activism in the country. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to claims of excessive force and the students’ demands for political change.
