The Maharashtra government has declared a mandatory 10% reduction in water supply across all urban regions, effective from October 16. This decision arises from a notable decline in rainfall, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, which is known to disrupt monsoon patterns in India.
El Niño, characterized by the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, significantly impacts weather systems around the globe, including India’s monsoon. The state has been grappling with a severe rainfall deficit, leading to drought conditions being declared in approximately 74% of its subdistricts last month.
During a press briefing, Girish Mahajan, Maharashtra’s Minister of Water Resources, emphasized the necessity of water conservation. He instructed citizens to utilize water sparingly and stressed the implementation of strict measures to avert any potential drinking water shortages. The state’s water-saving initiative will remain in effect until August 31, 2027, as the adverse impacts of El Niño are expected to persist into the following year.
To bolster its water management strategy, the Maharashtra government has outlined several key directives. These include curbing water leakage, ensuring that sewage treatment facilities operate at optimal capacity, and prioritizing drinking water and livestock needs before irrigation requirements. The shift in policy aims not only to manage the current crisis but to establish a more sustainable approach to water usage moving forward.
The broader context reveals that many regions across India are facing a deficit in monsoon rainfall this season. This situation places additional pressure on state resources and highlights the urgent need for effective water management strategies amid changing climatic conditions. The Maharashtra government’s proactive measures underscore the importance of preparedness and community involvement in safeguarding this vital resource.
