In a troubling development for the electoral landscape of Karnataka, a report has revealed that over 4,000 applications seeking to delete voters from the electoral rolls have been filed, with a significant majority targeting Muslim voters. This information, reported by The Hindu, draws on data from Form 10, which compiles details from Form 7 applications aimed at voter deletions.
The investigations highlighted particularly alarming trends in the Babaleshwar Assembly constituency within the Vijayapura district. On September 22, a staggering 1,373 Form 7 applications were submitted, with an overwhelming 99.2%—or 1,363 applications—originating from just 10 individuals. Notably, these applications were primarily directed against Muslim voters in polling stations where the individuals filing the objections were not even registered themselves.
Similar patterns emerged in Bhalki, located in the Bidar district, where more than 1,700 applications for voter deletions were lodged on September 23 by only 30 individuals. Many of these objectors had also submitted claims the day prior, indicating a systematic approach to targeting specific voter demographics. Prior to September 22, requests for voter deletion on the grounds of relocation were typically minimal, often limited to just a few applications per polling station, primarily filed by voters who had genuinely moved.
The surge in deletion requests appears to coincide with the approaching deadline for filing claims and objections, raising concerns about the motives behind such bulk applications. Voter rights advocates and political observers have expressed alarm over the implications of this trend, fearing it could undermine the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
Officials in both Bidar and Vijayapura have come under scrutiny for their handling of this situation. The unusual spike in applications, especially those targeting a specific community, has prompted calls for a thorough investigation to ensure that the electoral process remains fair and inclusive. As Karnataka gears up for upcoming elections, the focus now shifts to how these allegations will be addressed and what measures will be taken to protect the rights of all voters.
