The Supreme Court of India has opted not to entertain a plea from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, contesting the freezing of four bank accounts belonging to the party. This decision came on Thursday, as the court noted that the issues surrounding the accounts are currently under examination by the Calcutta High Court.
The bench emphasized that it would refrain from delving into the details of the case or making any judgment about the ongoing disputes. The Supreme Court’s inaction stems from its respect for the judicial process already underway in the High Court. The court’s decision also reflects a wider concern over the interim order issued by the Election Commission, which has temporarily suspended the party’s symbol as part of the ongoing disputes regarding party legitimacy.
In an earlier directive, the Supreme Court instructed the Election Commission to resolve which faction of the TMC has the legitimate right to utilize the party’s name and symbol within a four-month timeframe. However, during Thursday’s session, the bench suggested that the High Court should expedite its hearings to bring clarity to the situation. This is particularly crucial, as the party’s ability to function effectively may be hampered by the current restrictions on its accounts.
The West Bengal Police froze the TMC accounts as part of a criminal investigation prompted by a complaint from MLA Biswanath Das. This investigation is separate from ongoing scrutiny faced by three HDFC bank accounts, which have also been frozen by the Enforcement Directorate. The legal entanglements and financial restrictions represent a challenging moment for the party, already under pressure from various fronts.
As the political landscape in West Bengal continues to evolve, the resolution of these issues is likely to have significant implications for the TMC. The party’s internal disputes and the actions of regulatory bodies highlight the complex interplay of politics and law in India, particularly in a state that has seen its share of political rivalry and upheaval.
