In a troubling incident reported from West Bengal, Shanti Gopal Giri, the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate for the upcoming bye-elections in Nandigram, has alleged that he was assaulted by a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during his campaigning activities. The incident allegedly occurred on Monday in a locality predominantly inhabited by the Muslim community.
According to Giri, he was confronted by Abbas Beg, a BJP member associated with the party’s minority cell. Giri claims that Beg challenged him with a provocative question about how he dared to enter the area, leading to a physical altercation that left him injured. “I was thrown to the ground and beaten so mercilessly that I nearly lost consciousness,” Giri recounted in an interview with a local news outlet. Following the incident, he lodged a formal complaint with the police against Beg.
The CPI has vocally condemned the attack, labeling it as an assault not only on Giri but also on the democratic rights of individuals in the region. CPI General Secretary D. Raja expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it indicative of the prevailing atmosphere of intimidation and undemocratic practices under the BJP’s rule in West Bengal. He stated, “This brutal attack on our candidate reflects the level of goondaism and fear tactics being employed to suppress dissent and manipulate the electoral process.”
In a twist to the narrative, Abbas Beg has responded to the allegations by filing a counter-complaint. He claims that Giri and his supporters attacked him, asserting that his action of confronting Giri was meant to prevent communal fear-mongering. Beg alleges that Giri and his associates assaulted him with bamboo sticks during their confrontation.
This incident is particularly significant against the backdrop of West Bengal’s complex political landscape, where tensions between the CPI and BJP have been escalating. The bye-elections in Nandigram, a seat that previously garnered national attention during the 2021 West Bengal elections, are being closely watched as a barometer of political sentiments in the state. The CPI’s accusations of violence and intimidation against BJP members raise questions regarding the safety and fairness of the electoral process in this politically charged environment.
