Supreme Court Upholds Inquiry Committee Amid Youth Protest Controversy

The Supreme Court of India has declined a request to reconstitute a committee set up to investigate alleged police brutality during youth protests that erupted in July. The court’s decision, delivered on Wednesday, reinforces the integrity of the committee amid growing scrutiny regarding its composition and the accusations surrounding it.

Initially formed on August 18, the inquiry committee was established in response to various petitions that claimed law enforcement officials employed excessive force against demonstrators who marched towards Parliament on July 20. The committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice R. Subhash Reddy and includes prominent members such as former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla, and retired Meghalaya police chief L.R. Bishnoi.

The youth protests, which were fueled by a range of socio-political issues, witnessed significant unrest as security personnel resorted to lathi charges, teargas, and pellet guns to disperse crowds. Reports surfaced of injuries sustained by numerous protestors, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the police’s conduct. Notably, instances of alleged police violence in Bihar against demonstrators supporting the Delhi protests were also highlighted by the petitioners.

In the latest court session, the bench expressed concern over premature doubts cast on the committee’s credibility, emphasizing the need for the inquiry to proceed without unnecessary distractions. The court has instructed the committee to consider both the suggestions put forth by the petitioners and the responses from the Union government, ensuring a comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding the protests.

This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to uphold civil liberties and investigate allegations of police misconduct.
