Odisha Government Denies Early Release for Graham Staines Murder Convict Dara Singh

The Odisha government has officially denied the request for the early release of Dara Singh, a member of the Bajrang Dal, who is currently serving a life sentence for the gruesome murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in 1999. The decision was confirmed by the state authorities following a recent assessment by the sentence review board.

Singh, who has spent over 26 years behind bars, was previously recommended for early release by the director general of prisons and correctional services based on his reported good behavior in prison. However, the review board, which convened on August 31, ultimately decided against granting his release, citing concerns that it could incite communal unrest in the region.

Further complicating the situation, a gathering of approximately 200-250 supporters of Dara Singh took place outside Kendujhar Jail around the same time, where they reportedly shouted provocative slogans in favor of his release. This demonstration raised alarms for local authorities, who feared that Singh’s liberation could heighten tensions in an already sensitive landscape.

Dara Singh is associated with a group named after him, known as the Dara Sena, which actively campaigns for his release. Singh has made claims in a 2024 remission petition submitted to the Supreme Court, arguing for consideration of his early release on the basis that he is over 60 years old and has already served a significant portion of his sentence. He expressed remorse for his actions, describing them as part of a misguided effort to ‘protect the nation.’

The murder of Graham Staines and his sons, who were burned alive in their vehicle in Odisha, shocked the nation and drew widespread condemnation. Staines was known for his humanitarian work, particularly in the field of leprosy treatment, which further intensified public sentiment against the brutal crime. The government’s recent denial of Singh’s release underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding communal relations in India and highlights the sensitivity surrounding cases that carry significant historical and emotional weight.
