Journalist Claims Police Targeting His Digital Footprint in Ram Temple Donation Case

A prominent journalist, Abhishek Upadhyay, who has been at the forefront of reporting alleged financial misappropriations in donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya, has raised concerns regarding privacy violations by the Ghaziabad Police. On Tuesday, he presented his case before the Supreme Court, asserting that the police were attempting to access his digital activities dating back to June 1.

Upadhyay’s legal battle stems from a road-rage incident for which he has been implicated, an event he claims is a direct attempt to intimidate him due to his investigative journalism related to corruption in Uttar Pradesh. He was among the first to expose potential embezzlement involving funds meant for the Ram temple, which has been a focal point of religious and political discourse in India.

During the proceedings, Upadhyay’s lawyer argued that the road-rage case against him, filed on August 18, was initiated much later than the period for which the police sought access to his digital records. This discrepancy raises questions about the motives behind the police’s request, especially given that it coincided with Upadhyay’s investigative work into the alleged misappropriation of temple donations.

The lawyer emphasized the importance of protecting journalistic sources and expressed fears that revealing Upadhyay’s digital footprint could expose his sources to potential state harassment. He cautioned that such disclosures would place all of Upadhyay’s whistleblowers at significant risk, undermining the fundamental principles of a free press. “All my journalistic sources would be at the mercy of the state machinery and subject to harassment,” the lawyer stated, highlighting the chilling effect this could have on investigative journalism in the country.

This case highlights the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and journalists in India, particularly in matters involving sensitive political and religious issues. As the Supreme Court deliberates on the matter, it stands as a significant test of the balance between state interest and the protection of journalistic integrity.
