Meghalaya Police Clash: Four Alleged Militants Killed in Gunfight

In a significant encounter on Sunday, Meghalaya Police engaged in a gunfight with four suspected militants in East Garo Hills, resulting in their deaths. The police reported that these individuals were allegedly planning to abduct officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for ransom, highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding armed groups operating in the region.

According to the police, a joint operation involving the anti-terror squad, local district police, and personnel from Songsak Police Station was launched to intercept the suspects. The confrontation took place at a checkpoint when the suspects, traveling in a vehicle, were ordered to stop. Instead of complying, they reportedly opened fire on the police team, prompting a retaliatory response from the security forces.

After the exchange of gunfire, the four men were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival. The deceased have been identified as Allason Marak from Mendima in North Garo Hills, and Sustom Rabha, Kalam Ali, and Bobidul Islam, all hailing from Goalpara in Assam. The police stated that Marak was previously implicated in a violent incident in Damra, where a businessman lost his life. Meanwhile, Rabha and Ali faced multiple allegations, including robbery, abduction, and extortion.

This incident underscores the persistent issue of armed groups in the Garo Hills region, where security forces are often at odds with various militant factions. The police have intensified efforts to combat these groups, aiming to restore safety and order in the area.
