In light of escalating protests demanding the reinstatement of student union elections, Jamia Millia Islamia has transitioned all classes to virtual mode starting Saturday. This decision comes on the 13th day of continuous demonstrations by students who are advocating for democratic representation within the institution, which has not held student union elections since 2006.
The protests intensified following allegations from students that the university administration, alongside security personnel and Delhi police, attempted to forcibly clear the protest site and confront those on hunger strike. Students have expressed grave concerns over what they describe as an attack on peaceful protestors, particularly targeting those who have been enduring hunger strikes. The situation has raised alarms among various student organizations, prompting calls for urgent action.
Since the beginning of the hunger strike on October 12, five students have been at the forefront of the movement to restore the student union. The administration’s response included disciplinary actions, resulting in the rustication of one student, while two others faced suspension, with all three barred from campus access for a full year. The heavy-handed approach of the administration has led to increased tensions and further protests, with students demanding a formal announcement regarding the schedule for the long-overdue elections.
Reports suggest that on October 16, more than 100 security personnel descended upon the protest site, allegedly subjecting students on hunger strike to physical intimidation. A joint statement by student bodies condemned these actions, calling for the cessation of what they deemed an assault on their right to peaceful assembly. As the protests continue, the student community remains united in their call for democratic processes to be reinstated at the university.
The ongoing unrest highlights a growing discontent among students regarding their representation and the governance of educational institutions in India. As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see how the administration will respond and whether a resolution can be reached that respects the students’ demands for democratic engagement.
