In a significant revelation, the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, announced on Thursday that irregularities have been identified in more than 10,000 entries within the electoral rolls of the Pilibhit Assembly constituency. This alarming finding emerged following a special intensive revision of the electoral lists, raising serious questions about the integrity of the voter registration process in the region.
The investigation, led by the district election officer of Pilibhit, highlighted that a computer assistant at the Voter Registration Centre had been responsible for entering a staggering 13,779 applications through Form 8, which is utilized for updating residential details and correcting information in the electoral rolls. However, it was discovered that the office lacked any forms or official records pertaining to these entries, prompting an immediate response from the electoral authorities.
As a consequence of these findings, Rinwa confirmed that legal action would be initiated against both the current and former electoral registration officers associated with Pilibhit. Furthermore, the services of the implicated computer assistant are set to be terminated, signaling a strict stance against electoral misconduct. Out of the total entries scrutinized, a concerning 10,470 forms meant for corrections were approved, with irregularities flagged in each of these cases.
This announcement comes on the heels of accusations from the Congress party, which alleged that over 13,000 voters had their names unlawfully replaced after the final electoral list was published in April, following the special intensive revision. According to the party, the voter identity card numbers and serial numbers for these individuals remained unchanged, indicating that while the identification numbers stayed the same, the names were manipulated to reflect other individuals. Such discrepancies have raised alarm bells regarding the transparency and reliability of the electoral system in Uttar Pradesh.
The ramifications of these irregularities could be far-reaching, impacting not just the integrity of the electoral process but also the trust that the electorate places in the system. As Uttar Pradesh gears up for future electoral battles, ensuring that the voter registration process is accurate and free from malfeasance will be crucial in maintaining the democratic foundation of the state.
