The opposition coalition known as the INDIA bloc has officially announced that it will persist with its nationwide protests until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar steps down from his position. This declaration was made during the bloc’s first joint press conference following a series of demonstrations that erupted across the country, calling for Kumar’s resignation.
Neha Bora, the leader of the All India Students’ Association, joined prominent leaders of the INDIA bloc, including former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav, as they collectively voiced their grievances against the Election Commission. The protests intensified after the opposition leaders filed a petition with the Supreme Court, contesting the Commission’s recent intensive revision of electoral rolls. The petition demands an independent audit of voter deletions, transparency in the poll panel’s internal records, and an interim halt to the ongoing electoral revision process.
The response from the opposition leadership has been firm, especially after the Delhi Police decided to denotify Jantar Mantar as an official site for protests. Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President and a key figure in the INDIA bloc, expressed concern over this decision, asserting, “We will fight this.” He highlighted the significance of the gathering, noting that it is perhaps the largest assembly in Delhi for such a cause. He promised that further details regarding their action plan would be shared in the days to come.
Sagarika Ghosh, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress faction led by Banerjee, also weighed in on the situation, emphasizing that the opposition’s demonstrations will not cease until appropriate measures are taken against all Election Commission officials who oversaw recent Assembly elections in states like Maharashtra, Haryana, and Bihar. This sentiment reflects a growing frustration within the opposition ranks regarding what they consider irregularities in the electoral process.
The INDIA bloc’s actions underscore a pivotal moment in Indian politics as opposition parties unite against the electoral body’s decisions, which they believe compromise the integrity of the democratic process. As the protests gain momentum, it remains to be seen how the government and the Election Commission will respond to the mounting pressure.
