The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all states and Union Territories to assist the Delhi Police in preventing a wave of protests from reaching the national capital. This directive comes in light of a planned demonstration led by the Cockroach Janta Party, scheduled for Saturday. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan emphasized in his communication that the potential for severe disruption to law and public order necessitated immediate action.
The protesters are rallying for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns over the Election Commission’s management and its recent handling of the intensive revision of electoral rolls. This protest follows a series of demonstrations by the opposition INDIA alliance in Delhi, which have also drawn attention to electoral processes and accountability.
In preparation for the anticipated influx of demonstrators, authorities have implemented extensive restrictions, which critics are calling an overreach. Measures include detaining individuals associated with the protest, halting train services, shutting down 45 metro stations, and suspending mobile internet services in central areas of Delhi. These actions have raised alarm among civil rights advocates, who view them as intimidation tactics aimed at stifling dissent.
The Delhi Police have already turned down the organizers’ request to stage the protest at Jantar Mantar, a traditional site for demonstrations in the capital, further escalating tensions between the authorities and protest leaders. As the situation develops, various regions across India are witnessing similar calls for accountability from the Election Commission, with many citizens voicing their frustrations over perceived electoral mismanagement.
As the Union government continues to navigate this delicate situation, the impact of these protests on the political landscape and public sentiment remains to be seen. Observers are keenly watching how the authorities will balance maintaining order while respecting the right to peaceful assembly in the run-up to the protests.
