In a significant move, Meta Platforms Inc. has removed a viral video that allegedly depicted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Shankharav Sarkar engaging in suspicious activities during the recent bye-election in West Bengal’s Rejinagar Assembly constituency. The video, shared by Golam Nabi Azad, the main challenger from the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, raised serious allegations of vote theft on the night of October 6, prompting legal action from Indian authorities.
The clip in question showed Sarkar appearing to go behind the curtain of a polling booth where an electronic voting machine (EVM) was situated. Azad, in his post, characterized the bye-poll as an “unprecedented farce in the name of democracy” and accused the BJP candidate of having “looted votes.” This incident has amplified tensions in an already charged political landscape in West Bengal.
Reports from the ground during the bye-elections revealed troubling practices, with opposition party members claiming that police had barred Muslim voters from accessing several polling stations. Moreover, some independent journalists reported that their social media channels were blocked, curbing their ability to share real-time updates and observations from the voting process. Such actions have raised concerns about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
As the results were declared on Friday, Shankharav Sarkar emerged victorious with a total of 129,914 votes, while his closest competitor, Azad, garnered 54,098 votes. This win, however, has not quelled the controversy, especially in the wake of the allegations surrounding the integrity of the election process. Meanwhile, in Nandigram, another constituency participating in the bye-poll, BJP’s Hasirani Rath defeated Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, further solidifying the BJP’s influence in the region.
The developments surrounding the Rejinagar bye-election highlight ongoing concerns regarding electoral integrity in India, particularly in states like West Bengal, where political rivalries are intense. The swift action taken by Meta to remove the video underscores the intersection of social media and politics in the contemporary landscape, raising questions about the role of digital platforms in shaping public discourse.
