In a show of unity and determination, opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking the second consecutive day of protests aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration follows widespread concerns regarding the Election Commission’s operations and its recent management of a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls.
The protests intensified as members of the INDIA coalition, which includes key opposition parties, arrived at the protest site after attending a lunch event organized by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. The gathering at Jantar Mantar comes on the heels of earlier tensions, where police had detained several opposition leaders, including prominent figure Rahul Gandhi, after they participated in a prolonged sit-in demonstration near the Election Commission’s office. Reports indicate that approximately 250 individuals were taken into custody, which included around 50 MPs, before being released later in the day.
Security personnel were deployed at Jantar Mantar, where they attempted to persuade the protesting legislators to disperse from the area. The situation escalated when the police resorted to lathi-charge tactics against supporters of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), both of which are affiliated with the Congress party. This clash highlighted the growing tensions between the opposing political factions and law enforcement as they grapple with the protests’ escalating nature.
The backdrop of these demonstrations is a series of protests that have erupted across various regions of India, with citizens and political activists rallying against what they perceive as the Election Commission’s failure to uphold democratic standards and impartiality. With the elections approaching, the scrutiny on the electoral body has intensified, fueling public outcry and mobilizing opposition forces.
As opposition leaders continue to press for change, the effectiveness of the protests and the public’s response will be critical in shaping the political landscape ahead of the forthcoming elections. The calls for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation reflect deeper concerns about electoral integrity and the future of democratic processes in India.
