The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Telangana, C. Sudharshan Reddy, has issued a directive calling for stringent measures against individuals misappropriating Form 7 to target eligible voters for removal from the electoral rolls. This decision comes in response to alarming reports of misuse amidst the ongoing special intensive revision of voter lists in the Congress-led state.
Form 7 serves as a formal request for objections pertaining to the inclusion of names in the electoral roll or for the deletion of existing names. The issue arose when the Telangana Congress electoral office lodged a complaint with local police, alleging that certain booth-level agents were submitting an excessive number of Form 7 applications aimed at inappropriately removing eligible voters from the list.
These allegations highlight a concerning trend that has also been observed in other states where voter roll revisions are taking place. Reddy’s order, issued on Monday, emphasizes the need for vigilance and integrity in the electoral process, noting that there have been instances of bulk applications being filed that are suspected to be fraudulent. Such actions not only undermine the democratic process but also threaten the fundamental rights of eligible voters.
In his statement, Reddy urged electoral officials to take decisive action against those who intentionally submit false information in Forms 6, 6A, 7, and 8. Form 6 is the application used by new voters to be included on the electoral rolls, while Form 6A caters to Indian citizens residing abroad. Form 8 is employed for making corrections to voter details. The integrity of these forms is paramount, as they play a crucial role in maintaining an accurate and fair electoral roll.
The CEO’s proactive stance is a vital step toward safeguarding the electoral rights of citizens in Telangana. As the electoral landscape evolves, ensuring a transparent and trustworthy process remains essential for the health of democracy in India. The public’s trust in the electoral system hinges on the accountability of those involved in managing voter registrations and the rigorous enforcement of electoral laws.
