At the age of 68, TS Nandakumar embodies the essence of a musician whose life journey has been intricately woven with the notes of mridangam. Originating from Kerala, Nandakumar’s musical path began in Mumbai during the late 1970s, where he quickly became immersed in a vibrant artistic milieu, sharing the stage with legendary figures like MD Ramanathan, M Balamuralikrishna, and Bhimsen Joshi. His remarkable contributions to Indian classical music earned him the affectionate title of ‘Bombay Nandakumar,’ a testament to his deep-rooted connections in the city’s musical landscape.
After establishing a successful career in India, Nandakumar took a bold step in 2008, relocating to the United States. This move, however, came with significant challenges. Separated from his family for nearly a decade, he navigated the complexities of a new environment while remaining committed to his art. Despite the hardships, it was his passion for music that served as a beacon of hope during those trying times. His dedication to teaching and performing not only kept him grounded but also allowed him to cultivate international connections, nurturing a diverse student base.
Today, Nandakumar proudly mentors students across various countries, with over 50 of them having successfully completed their arangetrams, a significant milestone in their artistic journeys. His recent recognition with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the Overseas category for the year 2025 stands as both an accolade and a responsibility. As the second recipient of this honor, following renowned mohiniattam dancer, he views the award as a validation of his efforts and a commitment to furthering Indian classical music abroad.
The award is not just an acknowledgment of his talent but also a reminder of the cultural bridge he continues to build between India and the Western world. Nandakumar’s story is a powerful narrative that encapsulates the struggles and triumphs of an artist dedicated to his craft. His journey emphasizes that true talent resonates beyond borders, and often, if one remains good at what they do, recognition will naturally follow.
