The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has raised alarms regarding a low-fat dairy whitener produced by Nestlé, which was found to be “unsafe and substandard”. This revelation came to light after a sample of the product was collected from The LaLiT hotel in Connaught Place, New Delhi, prompting immediate regulatory action.
In a recent announcement on social media, the FSSAI stated that it has ordered an immediate halt to the sale of this specific dairy whitener. The findings were based on a laboratory report from a food analyst, indicating that the product did not adhere to the stipulations laid out in the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. Following the analysis, the food authority issued a notification to Bharat Hotels Limited, the operator of The LaLiT, informing them of the non-compliance and advising them on necessary steps to address the situation.
The FSSAI also underscored that Bharat Hotels Limited has the right to contest the findings as per the provisions of the FSS Act, allowing them a chance to appeal within a specified timeframe. This regulatory framework aims to ensure that food safety standards are upheld across the industry.
In response to the FSSAI’s findings, The LaLiT hotel clarified that the dairy whitener had been sourced directly from Nestlé India. The sample in question was collected approximately three months ago during a routine check. Upon receiving the FSSAI’s communication regarding the product’s compliance issues, the hotel took swift action by discontinuing its use and removing all remaining packets from its premises. They also articulated that Nestlé is expected to respond directly to the FSSAI concerning the findings.
This incident raises significant questions about food safety regulations in India, especially regarding the standards set for widely consumed products like dairy. The FSSAI has been actively working to enhance food safety measures across the country, ensuring that consumers are protected from substandard items. As more consumers become health-conscious, compliance with safety regulations becomes increasingly critical for food businesses.
