Tensions Rise as Pakistani and Indian Naval Ships Collide; Opposition Demands UPI Charge Rollback

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned the Pakistani charge d’affaires in New Delhi to express a formal protest following a reported collision between a Pakistani naval vessel and an Indian Navy ship. The incident took place in international waters of the Arabian Sea, although the specifics regarding the timing and reasons for the collision remain unclear.

New Delhi has condemned the actions of the Pakistani naval unit, labeling them “unacceptable and unprofessional.” According to the MEA, the incident violates a 1991 bilateral agreement that mandates advance notification for military exercises, maneuvers, and troop movements, emphasizing the need for decorum in maritime conduct. Fortunately, the collision did not result in significant damage, but it has sparked heightened diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

In another significant development, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the recently imposed charges on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. He criticized the government for succumbing to pressure from foreign entities, stating that the Prime Minister should “have a spine” and stop yielding to external influences, particularly from the United States.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also joined the chorus of dissent, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of implementing a “new loot policy” that adversely affects the common man. They argue that this is a clear example of foreign pressure dictating India’s internal affairs, reflecting the BJP’s weakened position under international scrutiny.

In response to the allegations of foreign influence behind the introduction of UPI charges, the Union Ministry of Finance has firmly refuted these claims. Officials asserted that decisions regarding UPI policy are made independently, without external interference. This statement aims to quell rising concerns over the integrity of India’s financial policies amid ongoing political debates.
