Café Mondegar and Three Other Mumbai Eateries Lose Licenses Over Food Safety Violations

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken decisive action by suspending the licenses of four restaurants in Mumbai, including the well-known Café Mondegar located in Colaba. This decision follows a series of inspections that uncovered multiple food safety violations, according to reports from The Indian Express.

During a recent inspection of Café Mondegar, officials discovered significant lapses in food safety and hygiene practices. Among the concerning findings was the improper storage of food, with hot items not being maintained at the required temperature of over 60°C and cold items failing to stay below the 5°C threshold. Additional violations included improper thawing methods and inadequate cooling of cooked food, which could pose serious health risks to patrons.

Inspections also revealed unsatisfactory conditions within the establishment, such as damp and damaged flooring, poor drainage near food preparation areas, and neglected sanitization of equipment. Such conditions can lead to cross-contamination, raising further alarms regarding food safety standards.

In addition to Café Mondegar, three other establishments faced similar consequences. The Maharashtra Biryani Center in Kandivali East, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm in Ghatkopar West, and Mahavir Cashew & Foods Pvt Ltd in Ghatkopar East also had their licenses suspended due to inadequate compliance with hygiene and sanitation regulations during food handling, preparation, and storage.

This crackdown on eateries is part of the FDA’s broader initiative to ensure food safety compliance, particularly during the festive season when food consumption typically surges. The regulatory body aims to maintain public health standards by holding establishments accountable for their food safety practices. In a related move, the FDA also suspended the license of Hotel Malhar Wada in the Pune division, emphasizing a larger push to enforce food safety regulations across the state.
