Midnight Raids in Bengal: Local Muslims Detained Amid Allegations of Illegal Immigration

In a troubling incident that unfolded in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, a family is grappling with the sudden disappearance of a relative following a late-night raid by unidentified individuals. The events of July 29 have raised alarms in the local community, particularly among Muslims, as reports emerge of individuals being taken from their homes under the suspicion of being illegal immigrants.

The ordeal began shortly after midnight when Parbin Khatun returned home from Kolkata. As she settled into bed, a group of men approached their residence in Ramakantapur village. They called out for Khatun’s father-in-law, Ibrahim Sheikh, a 61-year-old man. Upon answering the door, Sheikh was immediately surrounded by seven to eight men who, although dressed in civilian attire, displayed behavior indicative of law enforcement.

Khatun recounted the moment they demanded to see Sheikh’s identification documents. The elderly man presented his Aadhaar and voter ID cards, asserting his Indian nationality. However, this did little to assuage the men, who bluntly questioned, “Are you Indian or Bangladeshi?” Sheikh, steadfast in his identity, claimed he was Indian. Nevertheless, the men dismissed his assertion, alleging they had information proving otherwise. In a scene reminiscent of a police operation, they forcefully restrained Sheikh, leading him away as he expressed fear and confusion.

According to Khatun, no official documents or complaints were presented to justify this abrupt action. The lack of transparency in the process has left the family and the local community in a state of anxiety. Khatun’s pleas for clarification went unanswered, highlighting a growing concern about the treatment of Muslims in the region amid rising tensions surrounding citizenship and immigration issues.

This incident is part of a broader narrative in West Bengal, where fears regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) continue to loom large. While the government has maintained that these measures are aimed at identifying illegal immigrants, many in the Muslim community feel targeted and vulnerable.
