Clashes Erupt in Ranchi as Students Protest High Court’s Stay on Jharkhand Recruitment Cancellation

In a tense confrontation on Friday, protesters in Ranchi clashed with police and members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) following the Jharkhand High Court’s decision to stay the state government’s cancellation of various recruitment appointments. The protests were led by students advocating for their rights under the banner of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission-Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JPSC-JSSC) Reforms Manch.

The unrest began when students attempted to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, symbolizing their anger towards what they perceive as betrayal from the government regarding job opportunities. These job aspirants accused the state administration of deceiving them, igniting emotions that led to the chaotic scenes in the capital.

The Mahagathbandhan alliance, which includes the JMM along with Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, currently holds power in Jharkhand. The recent ruling by the High Court mandated that the state government halt its cancellation of the 11th to 13th Jharkhand Public Service Commission Combined Civil Services examinations. The court further ordered that candidates who had been selected through these examinations should resume their duties without delay.

In light of the court’s decision, the Reforms Manch group called for a state-wide protest, urging students to burn effigies of Soren across all 24 districts of Jharkhand. This initiative was intended to express their discontent with the handling of recruitment processes and the government’s perceived failure to uphold its promises.

Tensions escalated in Ranchi when the marchers defied the pre-approved route and headed towards the JPSC office, causing disruptions in traffic. Lalpur police station’s officer-in-charge, Rupesh Kumar Singh, reported that police intervened as the students attempted to carry out their plans to burn the effigies. This divergence from the designated protest route not only sparked confrontations but also intensified the already heated atmosphere.

The situation highlights the growing frustration among job seekers in Jharkhand, who feel increasingly marginalized by the government’s recruitment policies. As protests gain momentum, the response from the state administration and political leaders will be crucial in addressing the grievances of the demonstrators while maintaining public order.
