Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration Cancels Plans for Green AI Data Centre

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has officially retracted its recent invitation for proposals aimed at establishing a ‘green’ artificial intelligence data centre in the region. This decision, communicated in a notice dated August 14, was attributed to unspecified ‘administrative reasons’ and has taken effect immediately.

On August 10, the local administration had sought expressions of interest from private entities to assess the feasibility of constructing a sustainable AI/data centre in either the Great Nicobar or Little Andaman areas. The envisioned centre was to feature advanced computing technologies, including graphics processing units, and was designed with a commitment to renewable energy sources. Plans included innovative cooling solutions, both seawater-based and freshwater-free, to minimize environmental impact.

However, the initiative faced pushback from local tribal communities and environmental experts, particularly in light of a proposed ₹91,000-crore infrastructure project on Great Nicobar Island. Concerns were raised regarding the ecological implications of such developments, prompting the administration to engage in discussions with tribal representatives to finalize a master plan for the larger project.

Notably, the sites earmarked for the proposed data centre were situated in regions that are also designated for wildlife corridors, biodiversity tourism, agricultural activities, and residential developments. This overlap with conservation areas raised significant alarm among local communities and conservationists, who are advocating for the preservation of the islands’ unique ecosystems.

The withdrawal of the data centre proposal marks a pivotal moment for the administration as it navigates the complex terrain of development versus environmental stewardship. As the Andaman and Nicobar Islands continue to attract attention for potential infrastructure growth, the need for a balanced approach that respects both technological advancement and the region’s natural heritage is increasingly critical.
