A devastating fire swept through a residential building in Vile Parle West, Mumbai, on Tuesday night, resulting in the loss of two lives, including a two-year-old boy and a young woman. The incident occurred around 10 PM at the 11th floor of a 12-storey structure, leading to a harrowing situation that left six others injured.
The victims have been identified as Abir, aged 2, and Ankita, 23 years old. Both were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The six individuals who sustained injuries were quickly attended to, with two already discharged and the remaining four reported to be in stable condition, according to statements from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Emergency services were swift to act, and within a few hours, they managed to control the fire by approximately 1 AM. The blaze was primarily confined to electrical wiring, an air conditioning unit, household furniture, kitchen utensils, and a false ceiling, affecting an estimated area of about 4,000 square feet. Fortunately, 15 people who were trapped on the building’s terrace due to the flames were successfully rescued, illustrating the effectiveness of the firefighting response.
As investigations begin to determine the cause of the fire, residents are left grappling with the tragedy that struck their community. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present in high-rise living, where quick evacuations can prove challenging during emergencies. The building, located near St. Xavier School on Church Road, has raised concerns regarding fire safety protocols in residential complexes, prompting calls for stricter regulations and preventive measures.
Local authorities are now under pressure to reassess safety measures in high-rise buildings across the city. In light of the tragedy, community leaders and residents alike are emphasizing the need for improved fire safety education and preparedness to prevent such events in the future. The incident not only highlights the fragility of life but also the importance of community vigilance in ensuring safety in urban living environments.
