Congress Demands Amit Shah’s Statement as Parliament Stalemate Persists Over Delhi Protest Crackdown

In a significant escalation of tensions within the Indian Parliament, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has stated that the ongoing deadlock will endure until Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses allegations regarding police brutality during youth protests in Delhi on July 20. Vadra emphasized that the situation in Parliament would not improve until Shah provides a detailed statement regarding the police’s actions during the protests. According to reports, the police in the national capital, along with central armed forces, are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which Shah leads. Congress has been vocal about the need for accountability and transparency regarding the use of force against demonstrators, particularly since the protests involved a large number of youth demanding fair examination processes.

On the contrary, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has indicated that Amit Shah is prepared to speak on the matter, but only if the opposition refrains from disrupting parliamentary proceedings. As the Monsoon session of Parliament commenced on July 20 and is scheduled to conclude on August 13, the frequent adjournments have stalled numerous legislative discussions, leading to dissatisfaction among lawmakers.

To ensure their voices are heard during this crucial time, the Congress party has issued a directive to its Members of Parliament (MPs), mandating their presence in both Houses on August 10, 11, and 12. These dates have been earmarked for discussions on what Congress describes as “very important” legislative matters. In a show of unity, the party is also rallying its INDIA bloc allies, urging them to maintain a strong presence in Parliament during these sessions.
