Indian Electric Vehicle Manufacturers Surpass Global Giants in Battery Efficiency

In a significant achievement for India’s automotive sector, local manufacturers are outpacing global leaders Tesla and BYD in the production of energy-efficient electric vehicles (EVs). Tata Motors has emerged at the forefront, topping a recent report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), which evaluated the efficiency of battery EVs projected for 2025.

The report highlights that Tata Motors’ vehicles achieved an impressive average energy consumption of just 106 watt-hours per kilometer (Wh/km), significantly outperforming other competitors. Following closely behind, Mahindra also made its mark with an average consumption rate of 113 Wh/km. In stark contrast, the well-established Tesla and the world’s largest EV manufacturer, BYD from Shenzhen, China, ranked third and fourth, respectively, in this pivotal ranking.

The ICCT’s analysis encompassed 22 of the top global EV manufacturers, revealing that the overall energy consumption across leading EVs has remained relatively stable, with an average of 131 Wh/km. Only a handful of manufacturers managed to enhance their energy efficiency, while others experienced slight reductions, attributed largely to shifts in fleet composition.

Despite the remarkable advancements by Indian companies, the adoption of electric vehicles in India remains relatively low, with less than 5% of new passenger vehicle sales being electric. This is a stark contrast to the global average, where EV sales constitute about 25% of the market. The Indian government, however, has ambitious plans to change this scenario, aiming for 30% of all passenger vehicles to be electric by the year 2030.

The push towards electrification is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation in the country. As domestic manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra continue to innovate and improve their technologies, the Indian automotive industry is poised to play a crucial role in the global transition to electric mobility.
