In light of recent protests and police actions against youth demonstrators who allegedly made derogatory comments about him on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed a desire to forgive these young individuals. Through a video shared on social media platforms, he acknowledged the chaos that unfolded at Jantar Mantar, where some youths reportedly used abusive language towards him and even towards his late mother.
Modi remarked that youthful mistakes should be seen as opportunities for growth rather than condemnation. “The world watched the events at Jantar Mantar, where some misguided youth resorted to language unbefitting of a civilized society,” he stated, sensing the cultural disquiet that arises when young people express anger inappropriately. He emphasized that although individuals may err in judgment during their formative years, such missteps can be corrected with guidance.
Expressing empathy towards the youth, the Prime Minister acknowledged the societal anger that fuels such protests. He noted that many young people are struggling with their emotions and may feel alienated. Modi underscored the importance of redirecting this anger into constructive dialogue rather than punitive measures, suggesting that the public must exercise restraint instead of pushing these students through a cycle of legal challenges.
“It is essential to forgive and guide these children, for they are a product of our society. We must collectively show them the right path, even if it is challenging for those who have been led astray,” he urged. Modi reiterated that retaliation and hostility will not foster solutions to the underlying issues at hand, emphasizing that guidance and compassion should prevail in addressing grievances.
In a pointed response, the Congress party commented on Modi’s remarks, interpreting his call for forgiveness as an indication of his broader responsibility as a leader. They suggested that the Prime Minister should also reflect on his governance and the sentiments of the people at large. The narrative around the protests and the Prime Minister’s response reflects a significant moment in India’s socio-political landscape, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and understanding amid rising tensions.
