Delhi Police Initiates FIR Against X for Alleged Defamatory Posts Targeting PM Modi

The Delhi Police has officially filed a first information report (FIR) against the social media platform X, following claims of defamatory posts concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This action comes in response to content that was reportedly disseminated during youth-led protests, which have been a focal point of public debate in recent weeks.

According to reports, the FIR has been lodged with the Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit. The charges against X include criminal intimidation, public mischief, and defamation. The police’s move underscores a growing trend of monitoring social media content that is perceived as harmful or derogatory towards prominent public figures.

In addition to the FIR, the Delhi Police has reached out to X, urging the removal of what they described as “derogatory, malicious, and defamatory content” aimed at constitutional heads, including the Prime Minister. As part of their investigation, authorities have requested detailed information about the account responsible for the contentious posts. This includes the user’s name, address, contact number, and email ID, along with login and logout records featuring relevant timestamps.

The police have highlighted the need to preserve all related details regarding these posts for future inquiries. They have also sought compliance with Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which mandates that any electronic evidence presented in court must be accompanied by a certificate verifying its authenticity.

This recent legal action is part of a broader strategy by law enforcement to regulate online speech amid rising concerns over misinformation and hate speech. Earlier in the week, it was reported that three major social media platforms received notices from the police, requesting the removal of content deemed objectionable in relation to PM Modi. As the digital landscape evolves, authorities are increasingly tasked with balancing freedom of expression with the need to protect public figures from defamatory remarks.
