India Eases LPG Supply Restrictions, Boosting Business Amid US-Iran Diplomatic Progress

The Indian government announced on Thursday that it has lifted all restrictions on commercial supplies of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), marking a significant return to pre-crisis availability levels. This decision arrives as ongoing peace negotiations between the United States and Iran have begun to stabilize the global energy market, particularly in the West Asian region.

With this move, the government aims to offer much-needed relief to sectors like hospitality and dining, which had been grappling with constrained supplies. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas indicated that not only have restrictions on non-domestic packed LPG been removed, but the limits on bulk LPG supplies have also been relaxed, bringing them back to approximately 50% of levels prior to the regional conflict.

During the heightened tensions in West Asia, the Indian authorities had invoked emergency provisions under the Essential Commodities Act. This led to a strategic redirection of certain hydrocarbon streams for exclusive use in LPG production, rather than allowing them to flow into petrochemical sectors. The intention behind this intervention was to bolster domestic LPG supplies in the face of international supply disruptions.

The recent thaw in diplomatic relations, particularly between the US and Iran, contributed to a more favorable LPG supply scenario, prompting the government to lessen the diversion of hydrocarbons from other industries to the LPG sector. Officials have assured that this adjustment will not compromise the availability of domestic LPG resources, and production will be maintained at a minimum of 40,000 metric tons per day.

In its statement, the Ministry emphasized that the government had prioritized ensuring consistent LPG availability for domestic consumers throughout the crisis. With the restoration of commercial LPG supplies, industries reliant on these resources can expect a significant boost in operations, signaling a positive shift in the nation’s economic climate as it navigates through the ongoing global challenges.
