The tragic collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata has resulted in an increasing death toll, now standing at nine, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. This unfortunate incident occurred in the Taratala region near Brace Bridge on Wednesday, where multiple individuals were trapped beneath the debris.
In the aftermath of the collapse, at least 20 people sustained injuries, prompting urgent rescue operations. As per the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, a total of 31 individuals have been successfully rescued; however, several others are still believed to be buried under the rubble, raising concerns and fears among families and loved ones.
In response to this devastating event, Chief Minister Adhikari has announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, while each injured person will receive Rs 1 lakh. Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Office has declared a separate ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the bereaved families, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured victims. This financial assistance aims to provide some relief amid the overwhelming grief and chaos following the disaster.
Authorities are taking decisive action in light of the incident. Kolkata Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the warehouse’s collapse following overnight raids. A Special Investigation Team has also been formed to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the event, seeking accountability and ensuring such disasters do not recur in the future.
This incident has raised questions regarding construction safety standards in West Bengal, highlighting the need for stringent regulations and oversight to prevent such tragedies. The emotional toll on the families affected is immeasurable, and as rescue operations continue, the community remains united in hope and support for those still trapped and their grieving families.
