Flash Floods in Arunachal Pradesh Claim Three Missing, Heavy Rains Disrupt Mumbai

In a devastating turn of events, three individuals have gone missing following sudden flash floods that hit Keyi Panyor district in Arunachal Pradesh early Wednesday. According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the heavy downpours led to the collapse of an under-construction retaining wall at the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited project colony near Poosa in the Yazali region. Dani Sulu, the State Disaster Management Secretary, confirmed the incident, which has resulted in the inundation of low-lying areas and damage to at least 18 houses.

The torrential rains have not only caused flooding but also triggered landslides along a national highway, creating significant disruptions to traffic and leaving many travelers stranded. In response to these alarming weather patterns, the government of Assam has declared a high alert, anticipating potential impacts from the flash floods on districts located downstream.

Meanwhile, the arrival of the monsoon has also significantly affected Mumbai. Just a day after the monsoon made its presence felt, the city experienced heavy overnight rainfall that led to extensive waterlogging in several low-lying neighborhoods. Areas across the metropolis recorded more than 200 mm of rain in a mere 24-hour period, ending at 8 am on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and the neighboring Palghar district, cautioning residents of thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h.

Although the red alert was later downgraded to orange, meteorologists have warned that moderate to intense spells of rain are likely to persist. This ongoing weather system is expected to affect not just Mumbai but also the regions of Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the monsoon progresses further into the region.

The southwest monsoon, crucial for India’s agrarian economy, often brings with it a dual-edged sword of relief and peril. While beneficial for replenishing water sources, excessive rainfall can lead to natural disasters, as evidenced by the current situations in Arunachal Pradesh and Mumbai.
