Protests broke out across multiple districts in Bangladesh on Saturday as members of the Hindu community rallied against the alleged desecration of a picture depicting the deity Ram. This incident reportedly occurred during protests opposing the construction of a temple dedicated to the deity in the northern Gaibandha district earlier this month.
The planned temple, which includes an 81-foot statue of Ram, has faced significant backlash, leading to its construction being paused. Shyamlal Kumar Mahanta, an advisor to the temple committee, stated that the halt in work was a precautionary measure intended to maintain peace and communal harmony. He emphasized that the committee aimed to avoid provoking any disputes or offending religious sentiments.
According to reports, tensions escalated during demonstrations against the temple’s construction, where Hindu groups claimed that a mob had insulted the image of Ram by throwing a shoe at it. Following this incident, a case was registered against the unidentified individuals responsible, although no arrests have been made to date.
The discontent among the Hindu community culminated in a torchlight procession held in Dhaka on Friday, demanding accountability and punishment for those involved in the alleged desecration. The protest quickly gained momentum, with similar demonstrations emerging in Barishal, Munshiganj, and Satkhira districts the following day.
As the situation develops, the Hindu groups have issued a 72-hour deadline for authorities to apprehend the suspects, expressing their frustration at what they perceive as a lack of action. The incidents have raised concerns about communal relations in Bangladesh, where religious tensions occasionally flare up amidst a diverse population.
