Delhi Government Announces 20% Reservation for Former Agniveers in Junior Government Posts

The Delhi government has taken a significant step to support former Agniveers by announcing a 20% reservation for them in the recruitment process for various ‘Group C’ positions. This initiative was confirmed by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who stated that the recruitment would cover roles such as police constables, fire personnel, jail wardens, forest guards, and wildlife guards.

The Agnipath scheme, under which Agniveers are recruited into the armed forces, allows individuals between the ages of 17.5 and 21 to enlist for a four-year term in the military. Notably, there is a provision that 25% of these recruits may be retained for an additional 15 years, thus providing them a pathway to a longer military career. This new reservation policy aims to offer former Agniveers an opportunity to transition smoothly into civilian roles, reflecting the government’s commitment to recognizing their service.

Lieutenant Governor Sandhu emphasized the importance of completing the recruitment processes by June 30, urging various government departments to amend their recruitment protocols accordingly. He also highlighted that these departments would have the flexibility to leverage the specialized skills that Agniveers possess, ensuring that their training and experience are effectively utilized in governmental roles.

In March of this year, the Union Home Ministry had already made a provision for the Delhi Police to reserve 20% of constable (executive) positions for former Agniveers. This includes certain exemptions, such as relief from the physical efficiency test and an age limit extension by three years. It is noteworthy that the Delhi Police operate under the Union government, indicating a concerted effort to integrate former military personnel into various public sectors.

Moreover, Haryana’s government made headlines earlier by announcing an increase in the reservation for Agniveers in police recruitment to 20% as well, reflecting a growing trend among states to support these soldiers transitioning back to civilian life. This initiative not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by these young individuals but also aims to enhance the efficiency of public service by incorporating those with military training into the workforce.
