A tragic incident unfolded in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district on Sunday, claiming the lives of four individuals, including a child, when they jumped from a train due to a false alarm regarding a fire onboard. The victims were struck by an oncoming train just moments after leaving the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express in a panic-driven escape.
The events transpired around 4:15 PM near the Hetampur railway station in the Jhansi division, following an alarming situation caused by a passenger who pulled the emergency alarm in the general coach, believing there was a fire. Railway officials revealed that as fear spread among the passengers, some chose to exit the halted train and unwittingly positioned themselves on the adjacent railway track.
At that very moment, the Patalkot Express was traveling on the adjoining track, and the individuals who had disembarked from the Intercity Express tragically failed to notice its approach. Anirudh Kumar, the Jhansi Divisional Railway Manager, explained that the curve in the tracks may have hindered their visibility of the incoming train. Despite the driver’s immediate attempt to apply the emergency brakes, the train was unable to stop in time and tragically ran over the passengers.
Eyewitness accounts and statements from railway officials confirmed that no fire was ultimately found on the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express. The deceased were identified as Virma Devi, aged 60, hailing from Bikaner in Rajasthan, Shakuntala Devi, also 60, Afreen, aged 35, and her four-year-old son, Asad Khan, all from the same locality. This heart-wrenching incident has raised concerns about passenger safety and the impact of misinformation in high-stress situations.
In light of this incident, railway authorities are urging passengers to remain calm and verify information before reacting in panic. The loss of life in this tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of false alarms and the importance of adhering to proper safety protocols during emergencies. As investigations continue, the railway department is likely to reassess its emergency response procedures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
