In a surprising political development, Prakash Chik Baraik, a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has resigned from his position as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP). This announcement came on Thursday, following a string of similar resignations that have rocked the party in recent days. Baraik attributed his decision to the sentiments of the people of West Bengal, particularly in light of the recent Assembly elections where the TMC faced a significant defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
While speaking to the press, Baraik hinted at a possible shift in allegiance, stating that “time will tell” when asked about his intentions regarding joining the BJP. His resignation marks the third departure from the TMC’s Rajya Sabha contingent within a mere four days, raising questions about the party’s stability and unity in the wake of its electoral setbacks.
Prior to Baraik’s exit, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, another TMC Rajya Sabha MP, resigned on Monday, also citing the disappointing results of the recent Assembly elections as a catalyst for his departure. Ray has since distanced himself from the party, expressing dissatisfaction with the current leadership. The trend continued on Wednesday when Sushmita Dev announced her resignation, citing both personal and political reasons for her decision to leave the party.
These resignations come at a tumultuous time for the TMC, which is grappling with internal strife following the loss in the state polls. Reports suggest that a faction of TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha has expressed their support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, around 20 of the party’s 28 MPs indicated their alignment with the NDA, signaling a potential shift in political allegiance that could further weaken TMC’s position.
Moreover, Ritabrata Banerjee, a former TMC MLA who was expelled from the party, has also claimed that a group of party members is in talks with the BJP, intensifying speculation about a larger exodus from the TMC. The party, once a dominant force in West Bengal politics, now faces significant challenges as it navigates through these turbulent waters, raising concerns about its future and governance.
