In a dramatic twist following the recent electoral defeat in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is grappling with significant internal discord. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had issued a stark warning to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating, ‘The more you torture us in Bengal, the more problems you will face in Delhi,’ during her first public address post-poll results. However, instead of solidifying its position, the TMC seems to be unraveling, both in its home state and on the national stage.
Reports indicate that a substantial faction of TMC legislators are openly defying Banerjee’s leadership. Last week, a staggering 58 out of the party’s 80 MLAs in the West Bengal Assembly chose to appoint their own leader of opposition, marking a significant challenge to Banerjee’s authority. This unexpected move has raised concerns about the party’s stability and unity, particularly in the wake of violent post-election incidents affecting TMC workers.
The rift within the party deepened further when TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha openly split into two distinct groups. Veteran party leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar revealed that nearly 20 of the TMC’s 28 MPs have decided to align themselves with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to pursue the state’s development agenda. This shift is particularly striking given that the TMC has been one of the BJP’s fiercest critics and is currently a significant member of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition formed to oppose the BJP.
The dissenting faction within the TMC is now taking aim at the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. His leadership and strategies are under scrutiny, with critics within the party questioning his ability to steer the TMC effectively in challenging times. Abhishek, who is also Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, has faced mounting pressure as party loyalty appears to be waning, with discontent brewing among its ranks.
This ongoing crisis poses a critical test for the TMC. With the BJP gaining ground in West Bengal and regional dynamics shifting, the party’s internal strife could jeopardize its future political ambitions. As the situation unfolds, observers will be keen to see how Mamata Banerjee navigates this turbulent period and whether she can restore unity within her party against the backdrop of rising opposition.
