In a recent statement, MK Stalin, the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), emphasized that his party permitted its allies to support actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to prevent the imposition of President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu. This assertion came during an event held in Chennai where Stalin integrated former members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam into the DMK.
Stalin articulated his concerns regarding the political stability of the state, suggesting that the imposition of President’s Rule could potentially lead to a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) governance in Tamil Nadu. He reiterated that while he did not oppose the decision of his alliance partners to extend their support to the TVK following the Assembly elections, he remains steadfast in his belief that the state should not fall into the hands of central rule.
“You may go, it is your choice and your democratic right; I will not stop you,” Stalin reportedly told the leaders of the allied parties before they decided to back the TVK. This statement underlines his commitment to democratic principles even amidst political rivalry, showcasing a nuanced approach in balancing party politics and regional governance.
Despite the TVK emerging as the single-largest party in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, it failed to secure the requisite majority, falling short by ten seats. As a result, the TVK formed its government with the backing of various allies, a move that has left the political landscape in a state of flux. In his remarks, Stalin pointed out that the current government is, in some sense, propped up by the DMK’s tacit support.
As the political scenario unfolds, Stalin has called for a renewed commitment among his party members to work towards diminishing the influence of the TVK government. This call to action reflects the ongoing competition for power and influence in Tamil Nadu, where historical ties and rivalries among political parties continue to shape the electoral landscape.
