The West Bengal government has embarked on a significant verification process aimed at identifying beneficiaries who will be excluded from the public distribution system (PDS) based on the recent electoral roll revisions. Announced on Thursday by the state’s food and supplies department, this initiative comes in the wake of findings from a special intensive review of the electoral rolls, which highlighted discrepancies such as individuals marked as absent, deceased, or duplicates.
Under the new guidelines, ration cards belonging to individuals removed from the voter list will be rendered inactive. This includes those whose names were eliminated during the December draft list publication, as well as individuals identified in subsequent supplementary lists. Additionally, unmapped voters who were found ineligible after hearings and those removed post-adjudication will also lose their benefits under the PDS.
Notably, individuals who have lodged appeals with appellate tribunals or submitted applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will continue to receive PDS benefits until their cases are resolved. The department has set a deadline for the completion of this verification exercise by June 15, aiming to streamline the beneficiary list and ensure only eligible individuals continue to receive assistance.
Earlier, on May 27, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted that around 30 lakh beneficiaries enrolled in a cash transfer scheme for women would also face ineligibility following their removal from the electoral rolls. This announcement underscores the broader effort by the West Bengal government to effectively manage welfare schemes by ensuring that only deserving individuals benefit from them.
This move has sparked discussions about the intersection of voter registration and welfare eligibility, raising questions about the potential impact on vulnerable populations who rely on these subsidies for their daily sustenance. As the verification continues, residents and stakeholders alike are closely monitoring the situation, anticipating further developments.
