In a heartbreaking incident, a fire erupted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least four individuals. The fire broke out early on Thursday morning while 15 patients were being treated in the ICU at Prasad Hospital, according to local authorities.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary confirmed the fatalities and stated that initial investigations suggest the blaze was likely triggered by a short circuit. However, District Magistrate Subrata Kumar Sen emphasized that a definitive cause would only be determined following a thorough investigation into the incident. The fire reportedly ignited on the fifth floor of the facility, raising concerns about safety protocols in hospitals across the region.
Firefighters received an emergency alert at around 3:55 AM and promptly dispatched 12 fire tenders to the scene. Despite their swift response, the situation escalated quickly, leading to the unfortunate loss of life. Authorities are currently working to ascertain the identities of the deceased, with records of 13 patients recovered so far. Some patients were also receiving care in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and have since been relocated to safer areas within the hospital.
In light of this tragedy, Chief Minister Choudhary announced a compensation package of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased. He expressed his condolences and assured that the local administration is on high alert to provide necessary medical care for the injured. Arrangements have been made at district hospitals to accommodate those affected by the fire.
This unfortunate incident raises critical questions about the safety measures in place in healthcare facilities across Bihar and the need for stringent fire safety regulations. As the community mourns the lives lost, officials are urged to initiate a comprehensive review of hospital safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
