In a devastating turn of events, sixteen individuals have reportedly lost their lives due to heatstroke across seven districts in Telangana, as confirmed by the state’s Revenue Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. This alarming situation has prompted authorities to take immediate action in response to the increasing temperatures, which are forecasted to escalate further in the coming days.
The fatalities were recorded in various districts with the highest toll being four deaths in Jayashankar Bhupalpally. Additionally, three lives were lost each in Warangal Urban, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad, while the districts of Jogulamba Gadwal, Rangareddy, and Suryapet reported one death each. In light of this tragedy, the government has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the bereaved families, urging for swift disbursement to alleviate their suffering.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave conditions are expected to persist not only in Telangana but also across parts of central and northwest India for at least the next week. The IMD’s forecasts indicate a potential reduction in maximum temperatures starting from May 29, although for the next few days, regions in eastern and peninsular India will continue to experience soaring temperatures, adding to the distress of vulnerable populations.
In response to this weather crisis, Minister Reddy has instructed district collectors to remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that essential medical services remain on standby and urged residents to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and outdoor workers, to avoid exposure to extreme heat during peak hours.
As the country grapples with these harsh weather conditions, the IMD has also issued rainfall alerts for several areas in Kerala, providing a glimmer of hope for some relief from the oppressive heat. However, the ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by climate extremes, and the pressing need for communities to adapt and prepare for such occurrences in the future.
