The Delhi High Court has taken a significant step by initiating contempt of court proceedings against key leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. This legal action comes in light of accusations that these politicians have engaged in a campaign to defame Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma on social media, related to ongoing proceedings in the controversial liquor policy case.
Justice Sharma expressed her concerns during a hearing, stating that continuing to preside over the case might lead to perceptions of bias, particularly given the ongoing public discourse surrounding her role. To avoid any appearance of impropriety, she has decided to recuse herself from hearing the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) revision petition, which sought to challenge the trial court’s earlier decision to discharge the AAP leaders and several others from the case.
This turn of events follows a decision by Kejriwal, Sisodia, and another AAP figure, Durgesh Pathak, to boycott court proceedings in April. They had previously filed a request for Justice Sharma to step aside from the case, arguing that her involvement raised concerns about a potential ideological bias due to her association with events linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite their arguments, Justice Sharma rejected their recusal petition, emphasizing her commitment to impartiality.
The liquor policy case has been a focal point of controversy in Delhi politics, particularly for the AAP, which has faced scrutiny over allegations of corruption and mismanagement related to the implementation of the policy. The CBI’s involvement in the case has heightened tensions, as the agency moves to investigate these claims while the AAP claims political vendetta.
With the contempt proceedings now in place, the situation adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing saga surrounding the AAP’s governance and its relationship with the judiciary. As this case unfolds, it may have significant implications not only for the AAP leaders involved but also for the broader political landscape in Delhi as parties navigate the contentious relationship between politics and the legal system.
