Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially taken the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, with Assam Governor Lakshman Acharya administering the oath, while notable figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were present to witness the occasion.
Sarma’s swearing-in comes just eight days after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the state assembly elections, marking their third consecutive term in Assam. The election results, announced on May 4, revealed that the BJP won an impressive 82 out of the 126 seats in the Assembly, far surpassing the majority threshold of 64 seats required for governance.
The BJP-led NDA coalition, which also includes allies like the Bodoland Peoples Front and the Asom Gana Parishad, collectively garnered a total of 102 seats, showcasing a significant hold over the state’s political landscape. In contrast, the Congress party managed to secure only 19 seats, along with its ally Raijor Dal, which won 2 seats.
In the elections, Sarma retained his Jalukbari constituency with a commanding victory margin of over 89,400 votes against Congress candidate Bidisha Neog, solidifying his political influence in the region. Himanta Biswa Sarma first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021, succeeding Sarbananda Sonowal, when the BJP initially retained power in Assam.
The assembly elections, held on April 9, witnessed a record voter turnout of 85.9%, indicating a robust participation from the electorate. This turnout marks a significant increase compared to the 82% recorded in the previous 2021 elections, suggesting a growing engagement among the citizens of Assam in the democratic process. As Sarma embarks on his new term, the focus will likely be on continuing the welfare initiatives that have defined his tenure thus far, along with addressing pressing state issues.
