Political Unrest in Kolkata Surges After BJP’s Election Win: A Community’s Fear

Kolkata is currently grappling with a wave of political violence following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) recent electoral victory in West Bengal. On Wednesday night, the tranquility of a local neighborhood was shattered when Chandranath Rath, an executive assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was tragically shot dead just a short distance from where local resident Champa Chakraborty lives.

The alarming incident occurred around 10:15 PM in a narrow lane approximately six kilometers from Kolkata’s airport. Adhikari, who is considered a prominent candidate for the chief minister position, has seen tensions escalate since the BJP secured significant victories in the state elections held earlier this week. The circumstances surrounding Rath’s murder have only served to heighten the unease among locals, many of whom are now living in fear.

In response to the surge in violence, the state police have taken decisive action, arresting 433 individuals and filing around 200 first information reports pertaining to the post-election turmoil throughout West Bengal. Additionally, approximately 1,100 individuals have been placed in preventive custody as authorities strive to restore order amid growing chaos. The state has reported four fatalities linked to the unrest, raising serious concerns about the safety of citizens.

Champa Chakraborty, a garment factory worker earning a meager Rs 200 a day, expressed her deep concern over the violence encroaching upon her community. “We poor people have nothing to do with all of this. It’s terrifying to think that such violence can happen right outside my home,” she lamented. Her fears reflect the sentiments of many in the area, who feel helpless as political factions clash and the situation deteriorates.

The political climate in West Bengal has been tumultuous, with historical rivalries between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress Party often leading to clashes. The recent elections marked a pivotal moment for the BJP, which has been attempting to expand its influence in a state traditionally dominated by other political parties. However, the aftermath has been marred by violence and fear, leaving many residents questioning the very change they had voted for.
