The Karnataka High Court has formally requested a response from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding a plea submitted by Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni. Kulkarni is contesting his conviction and life sentence linked to the 2016 murder of BJP leader Yogeshgouda Goudar. This request was made during a session on Tuesday, where a division bench comprising Justices Venkatesh Naik and Mohammed Nawaz was examining Kulkarni’s appeal against the trial court’s ruling from April 15.
Yogeshgouda Goudar was murdered in June 2016, an incident that triggered a thorough investigation by the CBI. The central agency later filed a comprehensive chargesheet that included serious allegations such as murder, criminal conspiracy, and illegal possession of weapons among others. On April 15, the trial court found Kulkarni guilty alongside 15 other individuals, subsequently imposing a life sentence on him just two days later.
During the Tuesday proceedings, Kulkarni’s legal team advocated for an expedited hearing of his case, requesting that it be taken up as early as Wednesday. However, the CBI indicated that they require additional time to formulate their objections, pointing out that the trial court’s judgment is an extensive document comprising 680 pages. The bench acknowledged this and advised the CBI to request the necessary time to prepare their response when the case is presented before the vacation bench.
This case adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing political dynamics in Karnataka, where the rivalry between the Congress and BJP has been historically intense. The murder of a BJP leader has not only stirred political unrest but also raised questions about the implications of such convictions on party politics in the state. With the Karnataka assembly elections approaching and the atmosphere charged with political fervor, this case is likely to attract significant attention from both the public and media.
As the situation unfolds, the Karnataka High Court’s decision on whether to agree to the CBI’s request for time, and how they will respond to Kulkarni’s appeal, will be closely monitored. The legal battle reflects larger themes of accountability and justice within the Indian political landscape, particularly in cases involving influential figures.
